In the corner of the studio is a window that opens to a small roof terrace. Through a Matisse inspiration, I began drawing from observation and eventually painting the evolving subject.

By way of color and paint, this area became a contemplative space with intertwining inside and outside, sunlight and shadow, plant-ness and human-ness.
Varied techniques of applying paint coexist in these paintings. In some areas, color references a thing observed; elsewhere it departs boldly. The paintings contain a diversity of mingling strategies. For me, this variability is a natural approach to grappling with mind and perception.
